J M Brewster was involved in General Merchandise Selling in Shullsburg. He was born Jan. 12 1814 in Columbia Co. N. Y. and in 1835 came to Galena Illinois. In 1841 he removed to Oneco, Stephenson Co and laid out the town and opened a store. This he carried on till 1847 when he came to Shullsburg. His business runs $40,000 per year. He served as Co. Commissioner and Postmaster for several years. He married Elizabeth McNulty in 1842 and they had seven children : Mary S. who became Mrs. Allen of Blairstown Iowa, Elizabeth S. who became Mrs. S. H. Scales, Joseph T, Charles, Harriet J, Ellen S, and Laura A.
